Filipina Sy and Fernando Sy were married in 1973 but separated in 1983. Filipina filed for legal separation and declaration of nullity of marriage, claiming psychological incapacity which was denied. On appeal, she argued the marriage was void as their marriage license was obtained in 1972 but the marriage was celebrated in 1973, making the license expired.
