Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nervous system that causes muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. It develops rapidly over hours to days and is caused by an immune system attack on the peripheral nerves. Symptoms range from mild weakness to nearly complete paralysis and can last for several weeks. Most patients recover fully but some have permanent nerve damage.
