Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator who lived from 1870 to 1952. She developed the Montessori method of education, which focuses on child-centered, hands-on learning. Some of her key discoveries included observing that children have a natural love of work, discipline comes from freedom, and multi-age classrooms aid development. She opened her first school, the Casa dei Bambini, in 1907. Though her method gained popularity, it declined by 1940 before experiencing revival in the 1960s.
