The Waldensians were a Christian movement that began in the late 12th century in Lyon, France as an ascetic movement preaching apostolic poverty. Led by Peter Waldo, they came into conflict with the Catholic Church for not recognizing the authority of local bishops and refusing to acknowledge who was fit to preach.
