What is Caillois about?

Roger Caillois classified games into four categories: competition (agon), chance (alea), simulation (mimicry), and the illusion of vertigo (ilinx). Within agon are games like football and chess that require skill and training. Alea includes games of chance like dice that depend on luck. Mimicry refers to representational games like theater. And Ilinx seeks to provoke sensations of vertigo like in mechanical rides.
