Jose Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna to Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonso. He came from a family of 11 children and had Chinese, Spanish, Filipino and Japanese ancestry. Rizal received an excellent education in the Philippines and secretly traveled to Spain where he earned degrees from the University of Madrid and the University of Heidelberg. He went on to write two famous novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, that were influential in sparking the Philippine revolution agains
