What is Interleukin-1β in Late-Life Depression about?

This study found that levels of the cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β) were significantly higher (170% higher) in patients with late-life major depression compared to healthy controls. IL-1β levels strongly correlated with the severity of current depressive symptoms. There was no difference in IL-1β levels between those with subsyndromal depression and the other two groups. The results support the existence of an inflammatory response in late-life depression that may be state-dependent.
