Johanan bar Nappaha was a leading rabbi who lived from 180-279 CE in Roman-ruled Galilee. He was a student of Judah ha-Nasi and other prominent rabbis, and went on to establish his own influential academy in Tiberias. Johanan authored thousands of opinions recorded in the Talmud and is believed to have begun compiling the Jerusalem Talmud. He established authoritative rules for resolving disputes between rabbinic opinions and generally promoted a more lenient approach in religious law.
