This document describes a study of sulfated zirconia (SZ) catalysts for the esterification of myristic acid with short chain alcohols like methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol. Small amounts (0.125-0.5 wt%) of SZ catalysts prepared by a sol-gel method and calcined at 600-700°C achieved 98-100% conversion of myristic acid with methanol at 60°C within 5 hours.
