The Philippines is set to join the global rice market as an exporter for the first time, exporting varieties such as aromatic, long-grain, and organic rice. This year, the Department of Agriculture aims to export at least 100 metric tons of fancy rice varieties initially to markets in Macau, Hong Kong, the US and the Middle East. The country is on track to attain rice self-sufficiency in 2013 and targets exporting up to 300,000 metric tons annually by 2016.
