The patient is a 4 year old male from Kenya presenting with fever, drowsiness, and malaria. His lab work showed low sodium, bicarbonate, glucose, hemoglobin, platelets, and the presence of Plasmodium falciparum on his malaria smear. Plasmodium falciparum can rapidly progress to severe illness, so the patient received IV clindamycin and was transferred to receive a quinidine gluconate infusion for treatment of severe malaria.
