## Abstract The prominent role of X‐ray powder diffraction (XRPD) for the study of the dehydration and hydration behavior of microporous zeolites and clathrates can be documented by several typical examples taken from the literature. The importance of various interactions, in particular water‐framework, water‐extra‐framework cations, framework‐extra‐framework cations, and water‐water is discussed. However, it is emphasized that XRPD has its limitations, especially when species are disordered, and should be complemented as far as possible by the determination of bulk properties, and also by various appropriate spectroscopic methods.
