Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable diseases, accounting for more than 8 million annual deaths worldwide . Even with existing tobacco control measures, it is estimated that there will still be ~ 1 billion smokers in 2025 [2], essentially unchanged from today. In this context, several tobacco companies are progressively shifting their product portfolios to non-combustible alternatives to cigarettes (NCAs) such as heated tobacco products and electronic cigarettes that have the potential to reduce harm for smokers who would otherwise continue to smoke. This transformation is driven by the burden of disease caused by smoking. Inspired by the pharmaceutical industry and following guidance from the US Food and Drug Administration [3], rigorous scientific assessment of NCAs is required to evaluate their potential for harm reduction.
