Archaeological excavations in Piata Sf. Gheorghe in Timisoara have uncovered Ottoman funerary monuments from the cemetery that was located there. 54 graves oriented west-east were discovered on the west and northeast sides of the foundations of an 18th century Jesuit church. The graves contained skeletons buried directly in the ground or in wooden coffins. No personal items or clothing were found, consistent with Muslim burial customs of wrapping the deceased in linen.
