This study investigates the prevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibodies in patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) compared to healthy controls and patients with other autoimmune diseases. Results indicate that AIH patients have a significantly higher rate of anti-HEV positivity (7.7%) than healthy controls (2.0%) and patients with rheumatoid arthritis (3.5%). The findings suggest that HEV infection should be considered in AIH patients, particularly those not responding to immunosuppressive therapy.
