Contours are lines on a map connecting points of equal elevation. They indicate the shape and steepness of slopes - closer contours mean a steeper slope. A grid system overlays maps with Easting and Northing lines to precisely locate points. Grid references provide the Easting value followed by the Northing, without rounding, to identify locations. Topographic maps depict both natural and man-made features to show terrain.
