What is Neoliberal Education: from Capitalizing on Disaster to Critical Pedagogy about?
This chapter discusses neoliberalism as economic policy and ideology as it has been implemented in K12 schooling and higher education. The first section explains neoliberal educational restructuring. The second section examines the profit motives driving neoliberal initiatives as well as how the reproductive roles of education are changing in the neoliberal era. The third section considers the ideological projects and language that frame public education at all levels as private good. The fourth section revisits the author's analysis of how natural and unnatural disasters are used to further neoliberal education and it suggests the need for critical pedagogy as project and movement to challenge the neoliberal legacy and instead foster public and democratic forms of education and sociality.
