Dayananda Saraswati was born in 1824 in present-day Gujarat to a wealthy Brahmin family. As a child, he was intellectually curious and questioning of religious practices. Witnessing the death of his sister and uncle led him to question the meaning of life and death. At age 21, he left home to seek spiritual enlightenment from a guru. After 10 years of wandering and not finding a suitable teacher, he met guru Virajananda in Mathura, who became his spiritual guide.
