What is 3294: A comparison of 2D and 3D ultrasound in sonographic measurements of thyroid gland volume about?
Objectives: Although characterization of goiter is very important, a few studies have been reported about the normal values of thyroid volume (ThV). The aim of this study was to describe the normal values of ThV in iodine sufficient region measured by ultrasonography (US). Methods: One hundred sixty-five individuals were randomly selected in a community located in southeastern Brazil. We evaluated a clinical history of each subject and determined serum thyrotropin, antiperoxidase antibodies, TRAb and thyroid volume by US. Subjects with thyroid disease and under 20-years old were excluded. We finally studied 84 representative subjects (30 men and 54 women). The volume of the thyroid was preferably measured by a 5-12 MHz linear probe US on trapezoid mode. Results: The distribution of ThV was not gaussian. Men and old people had greater thyroid than women. The reference thyroid volume was median 12.12 ml, mean 13.05 ml (confidence interval (CI): 11.82 to 14.28 ml). In men: median 13.75 ml, mean 13.76 ml (CI: 12.12 to 15.81 ml); in women: median 10.66 ml, mean 12.55 ml (CI: 10.90 to 14.19 ml) (p Ͻ 0.0001). There was a positive linear correlation between age and ThV (r ϭ 0.37 and p ϭ 0.
