Unless is used in place of if + not in conditional sentences of all types. It can be used with the present, past, or past perfect tense in the conditional clause. The order of the clauses does not matter when using unless. Unless can replace if + not in Type 1 conditionals with the present tense, Type 2 conditionals with the past tense, and Type 3 conditionals with the past perfect tense. It has the same meaning as if + not in conditional sentences.
