About this document
¿Decadencia o Progreso?: La Música Del Siglo XVIII y El Nacionalismo Decimonónico by Ian Pérez Villalón is a document available to read on EtoBox.
This article hypothesizes that the overly negative view of 18th century music in Chile is rooted in the nationalist ideology of the 19th and 20th centuries. This ideology viewed the colonial period as a time of submission to a foreign power. The article suggests this ideology played a role in creating the dual image of the 18th century as both inferior to the republican era but representing progress from previous centuries. It questions traditional ideas through revising discourses and colonial documents.
