The crankshaft for a medium speed 4 stroke diesel engine is made from a one piece forging of 0.4% carbon steel. It is heated and formed in hydraulic presses to shape the throws, flanges, webs, and journals. The continuous grain flow structure provides better fatigue resistance. The forged crankshaft is then machined, stress relieved, and cold rolled to add hardness and compressive stress increasing fatigue life. Oil holes are drilled to lubricate the connecting rod and piston.
