What is Everyday Flora about?
Everyday Flora Shanghai in the first three decades of Communist rule experienced so little urban development that its appearance remained largely unchanged from the pre-1949 era. There were a few public projects in the 1950s, most noticeably turning the site of old British racecourse into People's Square and People's Park, building the Sino-Soviet Friendship Hall (now the Shanghai Exhibition Center) on the site of the deserted Hardoon Garden, home of wealthy Jewish businessman Silas Aaron Hardoon (1851-1931), and improving the conditions in the worst shanty areas. 1 The revenue generated from the city's industry and commerce was mostly transmitted to the central government and was used to support "brother provinces and cities," causing Shanghai's infrastructure development to lag behind. 2 One visible achievement in terms of urban development under Mao was verdurization.Verdurization (lühua) is a heavily loaded phrase in China.
