What is Æsop's fables: an anthology of the fabulists of all countries. about?

"[This book] begins with some of the very earliest versions that found their way into English through the printing-office of old Caxton. The bulk of those that follow are, for the convenience of the modern reader, borrowed from the translation of Thomas James, made some four hundred years later. Sir Roger L'Estrange's folio supplies some of the later classical fables by Æsop's imitators, and Phædrus, and Æsop's far ancestor in the Hitopadesa, are not forgotten. One or two English and Welsh tales, and La Fontaine, Lessing and Gay carry on the tradition; and at the end Tolstoi brings it within reach of our own day."--Introduction
