Egyptian architecture was characterized by massive mudbrick walls and columnar temples. Egyptian temples had rectangular plans with hypostyle halls and were oriented facing the Nile. Mastabas were early Egyptian tombs constructed of mudbrick in the form of flat-roofed rectangular structures used to mark burial sites. The Great Pyramid of Giza, built around 2560 BC for the pharaoh Khufu, was the largest Egyptian pyramid at 146 meters tall.
