A chest tube is inserted through the chest wall and into the pleural space to drain fluid, blood, air or pus from the intrathoracic space. It is usually inserted through the 4th or 5th intercostal space on the mid-axillary line. The purposes are to drain the pleural space, re-establish negative pressure in the pleural space, and equalize pressure between the thoracic cavities.
