What is Properties and Effects of Leaded Steel about?

Lead is added to steels in small amounts, typically 0.2%, to improve machinability. Lead is slightly soluble in liquid and solid steel, and during solidification it precipitates out as small lead spheroids that improve machinability. While lead improves machinability, it can negatively impact mechanical properties like ductility and fatigue life at higher temperatures or strengths.
