What is Acromegaly: A Unique Human Headache Model about?
Despite the usefulness of animal models of neurovascular headache, there remains a need to understand the pharmacology of primary headache syndromes in humans. This case report of a patient with a growth hormone (GH)-secreting pituitary tumor suggests that somatostatin receptors (SSTRs) are important in the pathophysiology of headache. Pituitary tumors commonly present with headache (37% of cases.) 1 It is known that acromegaly-associated headache may respond to octreotide, a somatostatin analog. 2 We herein report a patient whose headache responded dramatically to octreotide but not lanreotide, an alternative somatostatin analog. This differential response may provide an important message as to the precise SSTRs involved in headache pharmacology. ## CASE HISTORY A 29-year-old woman presented in 1989 with a 1year history of headaches and secondary amenorrhea. Her headaches were characterized by a severe, contin-From the Headache Group, Institute of Neurology and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Drs.
