The study investigates the velvet ant (Dasymutilla occidentalis) and its use of acoustic Batesian mimicry to evade predation by coyotes (Canis latrans) by mimicking the defensive hiss of the western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox). Through biomechanical and acoustic analysis, it was found that the stridulatory sounds produced by the velvet ant closely resemble those of the rattlesnake, eliciting similar startle responses in coyotes.
