The Torrey Canyon oil spill occurred in 1967 off the coast of England when the Liberian-registered tanker Torrey Canyon ran aground on rocks and spilled its cargo of 119,000 tons of crude oil. The spill contaminated over 300 km of coastline in both England and France, killing approximately 15,000 sea birds.
