This study monitored 256 ponderosa pines in California for 4 years to examine the relationship between infection by the fungus Ceratocystis wageneri and bark beetle infestation. It found that bark beetles were much more likely to infest trees infected by C. wageneri, with 62 of 90 beetle-infested trees being severely diseased at the time of infestation. Trees with more advanced infections were most susceptible to beetle attacks. The study provides evidence that certain bark beetles may attack diseased trees
