About this document

Biltong: A Poem by James Twala by Makungu is a document available to read on EtoBox.

The document describes a poor South African family eating biltong, dried strips of meat, as a substitute for protein. The mother retrieves strips of biltong from the washing line that have been dried in the sun but may be infected with flies. Her thin, hungry children watch closely and gnaw on the tough biltong with rotten teeth, unable to chew it properly. They later feel ill and regurgitate undigested food to chew it again, like cows, showing the dehumanizing effects of their hunger.
