This paper proposes a new method called spatial pyramid matching for recognizing natural scene categories in images. The method works by partitioning an image into increasingly fine sub-regions and computing histograms of local features found inside each sub-region. This extends the standard "bag-of-features" model by incorporating some spatial information. The spatial pyramid representation is then used with a pyramid match kernel for classification.
