Rome began as a small city along the Tiber River, growing into a powerful republic with a strong military. After a period of civil war, Rome became an empire under Augustus and experienced two centuries of peace and prosperity. However, the empire eventually declined as Germanic tribes invaded and a plague killed many citizens and soldiers. While the Western Roman Empire fell, the Eastern Byzantine Empire continued on with its capital in Constantinople.
