The historic Breakneck Road bridge over the Waianakarua River in Waianakarua will be replaced with a new concrete bridge due to being beyond repair. The 84-year-old wooden bridge will be replaced with a wider single lane concrete bridge with a flat deck. The new bridge was approved by the Historic Places Trust in 2009 and will be similar in width to the old bridge but made of concrete.
