What is Directional Overcurrent Relay Coordination Optimization about?
Sub-transmission and distribution networks are mainly protected by directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs). The adequate DOCR setting provides fault clearance in minimum operation time. In meshed networks, numerous constraints need to be satisfied for the relays to function coordinated among them in a fault event. Each relay uses the same setting to offer primary and as backup operation for the different possible faults in the meshed network located nearby the relay. This increases the problem complexity and can sometimes become too difficult or too time-consuming to coordinate manually. Hence, computational optimization techniques such as improved ant colony optimization and improved differential evolution have been proposed for the coordination problem. The major goal is to determine superlative dial parameter and pickup current settings for each inverse time characteristic relay to maintain selectivity in a fault event. Studies have been carried out on the meshed IEEE 14 bus system at maximum and minimum load conditions. The proposed algorithms have shown promising results compared to the widely known genetic algorithm. The analysis is based on optimization cost function, miscoor
