Professor Helen Bacon of Smith College has fortunately published as an attractively produced book her Bryn Mawr dissertation of 1955 which she describes as "mainly an attempt to establish facts--to find out how much and in what ways, Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides used the knowledge of their own day in representing foreigners." After some well-chosen words on the meaning of barbaros in the dramatists, she turns to a study of the three great tragedians. The material is collected and arranged into subdivisions under each tragedian, e.g., Language (where foreign words are brought together), Physical Appearance, Costume, Objects, Geography. There are often excellent remarks on particular citations or even whole plays.
