There has been a failure of communication across a gap between philosophical and sociological analyses of academic science, on the one hand, and, on the other, attempts to understand the social implications of technology. Ziman has rendered an important service in presenting a unified picture, bringing out clearly many mutual interactions and relationships between various aspects of these different fields.
