Three of the authors represented in this volume have passed away since the original Hebrew publication of their contributions. Rivka Schatz-UfJenheimer (1927-1992) was born in Lodz, Poland, and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After earning her doctorate on 'quietistic elements' in hasidic mysticism under the supervision of Gershom Scholem at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, she went on to teach Kabbala and Hasidism there and to publish extensively on Hasidism and on the typology of messianic thought. She laid the groundwork for a critical edition of the Zohar, sponsored by the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities; the edifice, sadly, will have to be completed by others. Isaiah Tishby (1908-1993) was born in Hungary and studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he wrote his doctoral dissertation on thirteenth-century Kabbala under the supervision of Gershom Scholem. He was Professor of Jewish Mysticism at the Hebrew University and published numerous articles and monographs on the Zohar, on the messianic theology of Moshe Hayyim Luzzato and his circle, on Sabbateanism and on Hasidism.
