Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility and of real-time triplane echocardiography in measuring right atrial volume. Methods: Right atrial end-diastolic volume and right atrial end-systolic volume, and right atrial eject fraction were acquired by 2DE using the equation of a prolate ellipsoid and real-time tri-plane echocardiographic method in 15 healthy volunteers and 18 atrium dilated patients. The results of the normal control group and atrial dilatation group were compared by 2DE and Tri-plane method, respectively. Results: (1) In normal control group or atrial dilatation group, there was no significant difference between the results measured by tri-plane method and the ones measured by 2DE (r: 0.861 5; 0.873 0) (pϾ 0.05); (2) The results observed by tri-plane method and the 2DE showed significant difference between normal control group and the atrial dilatation group (pϽ 0.05). ## Conclusions: The right atrial volume could be evaluated by tri-plane method of real-time echocardiography, which has great value in clinical practice.
