What is Correlation of Inferior Vena Cava Diameter to Central Venous Pressure: A Novel Application of Bedside Ultrasonography about?
Results: Seventy percent of the patients in our study were male. The average age was 48 years (range 26-80), with average BMI of 31 (range 16-53). Mean measurment values are shown within the following tables. Statistical analysis reavealed incremental increases in head position (0, 45, 70 degrees) accounted for 1.4 mm of vessel movement, p\.001 (95% CI, .85-1.85), or 5% increase in overlap p\.001 (95% CI, 2.4-8.0). Conclusion: We found the overlap of the IJ and carotid increased with increased head rotation. By minimizing overlap the risk of inadvertent carotid artery puncture during routine central venous access may be lessened. These findings suggest that the operator performing cannulation should rotate the subject's neck no more than necessary to allow unobstructed entry into site of IJ cannulation.
