Sri Lanka has experienced an explosive increase in cutaneous leishmaniasis cases since the early 1990s, with over 2,000 reported between 2001 and 2011. The disease is endemic and caused by Leishmania donovani, transmitted by the vector Phlebotomus argentipes. Prevalence surveys found rates of 2.4% to 3.5% in certain areas.
