The site, known as Camp Ashby, was located in Berkeley, California and acquired in 1942 for use by the U.S. military as a military police installation. The 13.53 acres were leased from private owners and the city and state for the San Francisco Port of Embarkation. Camp Ashby was established for the 779th Military Police unit composed of black troops who patrolled parts of the Bay Area.
