What is Performance Analysis of BPSK Optical Homodyne Receivers with Dual Optical Detectors about?

The performance of binary phase shift keying (BPSK) optical communication system is investigated. The dual optical detection scheme yields the threshold setting to be zero for detecting a binary phase shift keying signal. The moment generating function is derived and used in computing the error probability. The saddlepoint method can be conveniently applied to accurately computing the BER. The receiver output approaches a Gaussian process in the limit of large local oscillator power. The saddlepoint and the Gaussian approximations for evaluating the receiver output distribution are discussed, and their accuracy are checked by the numerical integration. Results showed that both approximations yield accurate enough results. Methods for choosing the strength of the local generator are also presented under the quantum limit and the effect of the laser intensity noise. Exact BER floors are derived under the influence of the laser phase noise. performance. One then needs to find an optimum local oscillator power for amplifying the incoming signal. The relative large linewidth of the semi-conductor lasers is also a serious problem in coherent optical communication systems. It is better to
