What is I. LANGUAGE about?

A detailed discussion of the concepts offeature (pp. 14-16), constituent structure (pp. 17-35), pro-element (pp. 36-47), and syntactic function (pp. 48-60) led to the following conclusions: a) Syntax and semantics cannot be separated. There is a polarity between syntactical and lexical modes of expression, but semantics is concerned with both of these modes. b) There is a hierarchy of criteria in immediate constituent analysis. The principle, formulated by Wells, that "the word is a relevant unit in IC analysis" (in Language, 1947: 101) is incompatible with the main principle of IC analysis. This main principle requires that each utterance be analysed into "maximally independent sequences " (1947: 88), where the measure of independence is substitutability in the largest possible number of structurally different contexts. Among the various possible Substitution relations the mutual substitutability of co-ordinate and non-co-ordinate structures is irrelevant for IC analysis.
