What is Understanding Electron Microscopes: TEM & SEM about?
An electron microscope uses a beam of electrons instead of light to illuminate a specimen and produce a magnified image. It can achieve much higher magnifications than an optical microscope, up to 1,000,000x, because electrons have wavelengths about 100,000 times shorter than visible light. There are two main types: a transmission electron microscope (TEM) which transmits electrons through thin samples, and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) which scans the sample surface with a focused electron beam.
