What is Cauvery Basin Stratigraphy Overview about?

The Cauvery Basin is located 160-460 km south of Chennai and encompasses an area of 25,000 sq.km. It is bounded by basement outcrops and fault lines and extends offshore. The basin is sub-divided into six sub-basins. It contains sedimentary rocks ranging from Pre-Cambrian to recent in age. Hydrocarbon source rocks are present from the Cretaceous period and reservoirs exist along the basin margins and fault zones. Traps formed from basement structures, faulting, and shale seals above porous reservoir rocks.
