A chemical leak at a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India killed thousands in 1984. Methyl isocyanate gas was released when water entered a tank containing the chemical. Over 800,000 people were exposed, with 100,000 seeking medical treatment and 2,500 receiving lethal injuries. Weak winds caused the toxic cloud to linger, affecting a wide area for over an hour and extending over 4 km from the plant.
