Rizal departed secretly from the Philippines to study in Spain. After stops in Singapore, Sri Lanka, and the Suez Canal, he arrived in Barcelona in 1882. He studied medicine at the University of Madrid while also observing Spanish culture. Rizal joined masonic lodges and wrote articles promoting Philippine nationalism. He experienced financial struggles but continued his studies. Rizal participated in student demonstrations against the university administration.
