What is Autonomous Mobility in the Built Environment about?

Mobility, from the transportation perspective, can be defined as the potential for movement and the ability to get from one place to another using one or more modes of transport to meet daily needs. It is thus a fundamental function of our urban ecosystems and is the primary driver of critical socioeconomic factors such as livability, productivity, economic expansion, movement of goods and services, and social inclusion. This chapter investigates the phenomenon of autonomous vehicles (AVs), a promising new mode of mobility, and critiques it within the sustainable transport discourse. Fundamental issues plaguing society at large such as increasing air pollution, climate change, traffic congestion, lack of parking space, adverse impacts on health and wellbeing, and the rising cost of transportation, are all reasons for propelling the AV movement. The chapter critically explores opportunities and risks in environmental sustainability impinged on by autonomous mobility It concludes by elaborating on four critical urban pillars that could directly impact the successful adoption of AVs in the built environment: infrastructure, technology, customer, and policy.
